Smillie Mechanical has run out of the same shop on Pierce Road in Freeland since 1984 — family-owned across three generations. What began as a Tri-Cities plumbing and heating company is today one of Michigan's trusted mechanical contractors.

1984
Founded in Freeland
Bernie Smillie founds Smillie Plumbing & Heating in Freeland, Michigan, serving homeowners and businesses across the Tri-Cities.
1994
A new generation takes over
Bernie retires and his son John Smillie steps in as President, overseeing all operations. The company grows into a full-service mechanical contractor — plumbing, heating, and air conditioning.
2014
The third generation
Maxx Smillie joins the family business. Today he serves as Vice President, handling estimating and project management on the commercial and institutional work that makes up the bulk of what Smillie builds.

Forty years strong
Forty years in, Smillie serves commercial, institutional, and residential clients across Mid Michigan — Freeland, Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City — with the same family name on the door and the same dedication to quality.
